Concealed Carry Handgun Requirements

Requirements for Obtaining North Carolina Concealed Carry Handgun Permits (CCH)

1. Applicant must present a VALID (All information must be Current and correct) North Carolina Driver's License or North Carolina ID Card. The Address on the Id or Driver's License must be the address of their residence.

2. Must be a United States Citizen.

3. Must be a resident of North Carolina for not less than 30 days prior to the date of the application.

4. Must be at least 21 years of age.

5. Not suffer from any physical or mental infirmity that prevents safe handling of a handgun.

6. Must have successfully completed an approved firearms training course and provide the original certificate with the application.

7. If discharged from the military, must provide a copy of your DD-214 which indicates an Honorable Discharge.

8. Must provide a list of all previous addresses, including place of birth.

9. Sign under oath, authorization waivers to Mental Health Institutions for background checks.

10 Pay a non-refundable fee of $95.00 (cash only) at the time the application is taken.

11. Allow for a waiting period of up to 90 days for application processing.

12. Provide other documentation as needed, (i.e. birth certificate, court dispositions, proof of citizenship, etc.)

 

What To Do If Approached By A Law Enforcement Officer     

 A.  Do not attempt to display the handgun

 

B. If you are in a vehicle;

      1. Roll the window half way down

      2. Turn on interior light, if at night,

      3. Place both hands on the steering wheel,

      4.When the officer approaches the vehicle, inform him or her that you have Conceal Carry Permit, that you are armed, and where the gun is located.                                          

 

C. If you are not in a vehicle;

     1. Keep both hands where the officer can see them

     2.Inform him or her that you have a concealed carry permit and

     3. and are carrying the handgun and where it is located on your person 

 

D.  ONLY ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE HANDGUN IF THE OFFICER INSTRUCTS YOU TO DO SO. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TOUCH THE HANDGUN  UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

 Prohibited Carry Areas

There area a number of areas where the carrying of a concealed handgun is prohibited either by statute or federal regulation regardless of the issuance of a concealed carry-handgun permit.     

1. Any educational property public or private of any kind (NCGS 14-269.2)

2. Any establishment where alcoholic beverages are sold and consumed (NCGS 14-268.3)           

3. State Property and Courthouse (NCGS 14-269.4)

4. Parades, picket lines, demonstrations at private health care facilities (NCGS 14-277.2)

5. Any federal property including building, land and facilities generally

6. Any property posted by the owner prohibiting concealed carrying of handguns (NCGS 14-415.11)

7. Any law enforcement or correctional facility, to include state, county, municipality university police, or company police (NCGS 14-415.11)

8. Any state or federal office or office building (NCGS 14-415.11)

9. Any financial institution including banks, savings and loan, or credit unions (NCGS 14-415.11)

10. Anywhere while consuming alcohol or at any time while any alcohol or any controlled substance is in the blood.  (NCGS 14-415.11)

11. Any assembly where admission is charged (NCGS 14-269.3)

DISQUALIFYING CRIMINAL OFFENSES PURSUANT TO N.C.G.S. 14-415.12(b) (8)

 

An individual who has been adjudicated guilty of or received a prayer for judgment continued or suspended sentence for offenses constituting a misdemeanor under the following specific statutes, or any other crime of violence, is disqualified from obtaining a permit to carry a concealed handgun:

1. Harassment of and communication with jurors (N.C.G.S. 14-225.2).

2. Violating orders, of court (N.C.G.S. 14-226.1).

3. Furnishing poison, controlled substances, deadly weapons, cartridges, ammunition or alcoholic beverages to inmates of charitable, mental or penal institutions or local confinement facilities (N.C.G.S. 14-258.1).

4. Weapons on campus or other educational property (N.C.G.S. 14-269.2).

5. Carrying weapons into assemblies and establishments where alcoholic beverages are sold and consumed (N.C.G.S. 14-269.3).

6. Weapons on state property and courthouses (N.C.G.S. 14-269.4).

7. Possession and sale of spring-loaded projectile knives (N.C.G.S. 14-269.6).

8. Impersonation of firemen or emergency medical services   personnel (N.C.G.S. 14 276.1).

9. Impersonation of law-enforcement or other public officers (NCGS14-277.

10. Communicating threats (N.C.G.S. 14-277.1).

11. Weapons at parades and other public gatherings (N.C.G.S. 14-277.2).

12. Stalking (N.C.G.S. 14-277.3).

13. Throwing or dropping of objects at sporting events (N.C.G.S. 14-281.1).

14. Exploding dynamite cartridges and bombs (N.C.G.S. 14-283).

15. Riot and inciting to riot (N.C.G.S. 14-288.2).

16. Fighting or conduct creating the threat of imminent fighting or other violence (N.C.G.S. 14-288.4(a) (l)).

17. Making or using any utterance, gesture, display or abusive language which is intended and plainly likely to provoke violent retaliation and thereby create a breach of peace (N.C.G.S. 14-288.4(a) (2).

18. Looting and trespassing during emergency (N.C.G.S. 14-288.6).

19. Assault on emergency personnel (N.C.G.S. 14-288.9).

20. Violations of city State of Emergency Ordinances (N.C.G.S. 14-288.12).

21. Violations of county State of Emergency Ordinances (N.C.G.S. 14-288.13).

22. Violations of State of Emergency Ordinances N.C.G.S. 14-288.14).

23. Child abuse (N.C.G.S. 14-318.2).

24. Any crime of violence found in Article 8 of Chapter 14 in the North Carolina General Statutes.

25. Violations of the standards for carrying a concealed weapon.
